Could acupuncture be the answer to treating PTSD among our vets? FOX 11's Laura Diaz speaks with VA doctors.

Treating veterans' PTSD with acupuncture

I asked him, I was like, give me the stress relief, you know, here, here, here, it's great. Veterans like former Army paratrooper Bradley Griffin, Navy 3rd Class Petty Officer Carlos Antonio Bernal Olmedo, and former Green Beret Isaac Che have all come here to the VA to rebuild their lives. Griffin says he drank a case of beer a day to run from the pain. Olmedo says he was angry, lonely, missing military life. He never slept. And Che, who suffered injury to his pelvis, knee, and hip during his time on Army Special Forces, felt anything but special. Just a monster. Extreme irritability, emotional regulation was not present. My marriage suffered and my interpersonal relationships at work, my friends and family, they all, they all suffered. This is not your father's Department of Veterans Affairs. At the giant VA building, off the 405 freeway, what's old is new. Veterans who suffered wartime trauma are now being treated with acupuncture. They say it's working wonders compared to before. They had me on so much medication that I was suicidal. I landed into psych ward. I just did not like life at all. Anybody that is struggling in the VA, I always tell them, come see Dr. J. It helps the brain to literally rewire itself over time out of pathways that are trauma or pain dominant. And this is Dr. J. Dr. Jeremiah Krieger heads up the acupuncture PTSD clinic. These vets usually see him once a week for the ancient medical practice of having tiny needles placed on key spots of the body. Here acupuncture is used to treat both physical and emotional pain. For some of them, they haven't felt that kind of calm since before they went to war. Vets say life after service is fulfilling once again, thanks to the VA and programs like this. Just really peaceful and meditative process that stays with me. You know, it's, it's wonderful here and then it stays with me throughout the day. I am getting my life back together. A lot of big changes since I started getting treatment here weekly. For the past several months, I've gotten engaged. It's giving me back my life, a quality of life that I haven't had since before the military.
