The holiday originated in the late 1800s, a period when many workers faced long hours and challenging conditions, prompting labor unions and activists to advocate for better treatment.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City in 1882, and it became a federal holiday in 1894 after President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. Today, Americans mark the occasion with parades, gatherings, and time spent with family, reflecting on the workforce's role in advancing the nation's standard of living.

The origin of Labor Day

On this day, September 1st, we celebrate Labor Day, a federal holiday honoring the American worker. It recognizes the social and economic contributions we've made. Labor Day originated in the late 1800s when the average American worker worked 12 hour days and seven days a week. Labor unions and activists advocated for better treatment at the height of the Industrial Revolution. The idea turned into a day to acknowledge those in the trade and labor unions. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in 1882 right here in New York City. Then in 1894, it became an official federal holiday when President Grover Cleveland signed S-730 into law. And to this day, many Americans take this time to attend parades and parties, relax, or simply spend time with family and friends. In the end of the goal, of course, is for us to remember the people within the American workforce who helped to raise the country's standard of living and push our country to new heights.
