Nearly two decades after their breakout hit "How to Save a Life," The Fray is back. Band members Joe King, Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki join "CBS Mornings Plus" to talk about reuniting, their next chapter, and what fans can expect on tour.

♪ Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend somewhere along in a bed of desks and I put out straight up... You don't need me to introduce this song. Everybody knows the phrase 2005 smash How to Save a Life. It put the band of childhood friends from Colorado on the map. After some time apart and the departure of one of its founding members, the band is back together making new music and marking two decades since the release of their hit album. They also recently launched a global tour and we're very very excited. Joining us now lead vocalist Joe King, longtime guitarist Dave Welsh and drummer Ben Wysocki. Good morning, good to see you. All right, so what made this decision to get back together? It's blowing my mind. What prompted it? I mean we just figured out we still love this thing, you know, and these songs matter to us and it's like they they want us to keep performing them, you know, and so, you know, once we played our first show back as who we are now, the fans really showed us that this is this is what they want. So we just kept going with that. I mean you're playing tonight, right, in New York City. It's already sold out, but I mean maybe there's some extra tickets for... But Joe, talk to us about what it's like for you to take over lead vocals. It, you know, anxiety goes up. Yeah, I'm sure. You know, I have to be aware of taking care of myself in a different way. You know, it's funny, I mean when, you know, we wrote these songs in our parents' basement, we would have never imagined, you know, being here in New York playing shows to begin with and beyond that just the fact that like these songs are part of people's lives, or their story, that's beyond us. I mean that's where you can, we experienced that at the shows and you can see it and it's this exchange of energy that's incredibly powerful to experience. So, I don't know, taking over the vocals is more about, for me, it's just embodying the song and just singing the song the way they want to be performed now. So, you know, it's so interesting, Ben, I love talking to musicians, especially those who have been together for a very long time. I just interviewed Ark Arfunkel yesterday and, of course, the first questions I'm like, so you and Paul Simon, you like grew up together, you went to middle school together and it's fascinating to me that you can be children writing in your parents' basements and dreaming about the life of a rock star or musician and then you're playing for, you know, 50,000 fans a decade later. Can you just describe, do you guys ever talk about like what it was like when you were 14 or 15 years old and the dreams that you had back then? Yeah, certainly. I mean, there's, it's kind of this constant state of trying to be present in where we are but also like gain perspective on where we've been and especially this year as we're celebrating this 20th anniversary, it's a trip. It's like, you know, we've lived a lot of life together since, you know, not nearly as much as Paul and Art, right, but it's an honor to, you know, still be here making music and, yeah, so we're kind of always trying to hold some perspective on the whole story and where we fit into that. So, Dave, you guys have a new single, My Heart's a Crowded Room. That's the first song the three of you wrote together. What was that experience like? It was good. I think it's probably indicative of what could come. We met a really great guy in LA who we've actually gone back to work with a bunch of times now and it's a good dynamic, so I think we're, we may have found something. Think the kids might like it, but what can fans expect from this tour? We're playing, sorry. Take it away, please. We're celebrating the first record, so, you know, we're digging out a bunch of those album tracks that we haven't played in a while, which took a little rehearsing. So, yeah, the first focus is kind of to celebrate those old songs, but then also, you know, mixing the new, the new track, which kind of puts everything into context and is the full story, you know, so there's a little bit of everything. Yeah, when it took a little bit of rehearsing, what were like the biggest cobwebs you had to dig up off those old songs? There was one song we hadn't played, I think, in 15 years. Are you guys sitting there going like, no, it's G, dude, it's G. Yeah, we were on Spotify. That's great. There's definitely songs where I'm like, I don't know if I'm going to be able to hit that note, so we're just going to have to bring it down. It's really funny. I love that. Every, every, like, even bands that are unsigned garage bands all over the world, like, they hear that come and they go, yeah, we do that, too. Put the Spotify to the microphone.
