Well, it's difficult to say precisely how this latest round of violence started. Both sides blame one another for launching strikes around their disputed border area early on Monday morning. Thailand says that it was responding to Cambodian attacks on its soldiers that were protecting an engineering project. Cambodia says that it took action following days of provocations from Thai forces. But the situation has been tense for some time now. If you remember, Thai authorities last month paused a follow-on deal to wind down hostilities after saying that a landmine blast had wounded several of its soldiers. Now, the Thai army says that it is targeting only Cambodian military infrastructure. But reports say that at least four Cambodian civilians are dead. Meanwhile, at least one Thai soldier has been killed. And the focus is really turning towards the human impact. Now, reports say that around 35,000 people have been evacuated from around areas around the Thai side of the border, and many people fear for their safety. Schools and hospitals have been shut, and there's a considerable amount of frustration as well among people who are tired of the fighting, the paused operations, and constantly having to evacuate when this sort of fighting erupts. Now, this deal, this ceasefire deal, was claimed by President Trump, but the reality is this was always a fragile ceasefire deal, and one that was made under tariff pressure from Washington. Now, it does seem as though the ceasefire deal has collapsed. The question is whether or not the two sides can come together and whether or not there can be a peaceful solution to the situation now.
