In Israel, air raid sirens sounded from Ashkelon all the way to Tel Aviv. Many of the rockets fired from Gaza were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome defence system. Israelis were told to stay close to their bomb shelters. It's frightening for us to run to shelters and I think it's terrible for Palestinian children who don't have shelters as well. Tensions escalated last week after the death of an Islamic Jihad leader on hunger strike in an Israeli jail, prompting cross-border attacks from the Gaza militant group, answered by Israeli airstrikes. Hamas, Gaza's ruling militant group, has backed Islamic Jihad but so far reportedly not engaged itself. But it is a cycle that can easily get so much worse all too quickly.
