There are widely varying reports of the number of deaths, with the opposition saying hundreds and the UN saying at least 10 people died. We thank the security apparatus for ensuring that all the chaos witnessed did not alter or stop the election process. The incidents experienced, especially around cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya and Songwe, were unacceptable, uncivilized and unpatriotic. Patriots build their countries and not destroy what their fellow countrymen built with blood and sweat. The government strongly condemns these recent events. The government has dismissed the opposition's tally of the deaths as hugely exaggerated and rejected criticism of its human rights record. Opposition party Jidema, which was barred from the election, says the demonstrations are proof that Tanzanians reject the outcome of the flawed poll.

Two more suspects, a man and a woman arrested this week over the jewel heist at the Louvre, have been charged and remanded in custody, prosecutors have said. The charges on Saturday brought the number of people now charged over the spectacular robbery to four.
