Our love is the same, and it deserves to be embraced and accepted. Taiwan was the first nation in the region to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. Since then, members of the pride community here say they've seen positive changes in people's tolerance. Before same-sex marriage was legalised, people tended to be more conservative, and some were even more radical on both sides. But after legalisation, it feels like everything has become normal now. People see it as a part of everyday life. But while attitudes in Taiwan are becoming more accepting, some here have expressed concern about a global rise in anti-LGBTQ sentiment. Many point to the Trump administration rolling back gay rights in the US, or crackdowns on LGBTQ activists in neighbouring China. Others express their dismay that this year's rainbow parade in Hong Kong was cancelled, and lawmakers there struck down a bill that would have recognised same-sex marriages conducted overseas. But Taiwan's LGBTQ community is not giving in. I'm aware that there's been an increase in conservative voices in these past years, but we hope that more people find out that love, freedom and equality are the values pursued by homosexual and gender minority people. A message that participants and organisers hope will inspire others, both at home and abroad.
