Rishi Sunak's pledge to stop the boats was perhaps his most ambitious promise for the year, and a Supreme Court ruling that his flagship immigration policy is unlawful has left his only plan to tackle the channel crossings in tatters. The legislation, which would send asylum seekers some 4,000 miles to Rwanda, spurred a long-running legal fight, but Sunak has said he's going to push on and try for a new treaty instead. The government has been working already on a new treaty with Rwanda, and we will finalise that in light of today's judgement. My commitment to stopping the boats is unwavering. Sunak and his office are now braced for a row that's long split his Conservative party, whether the UK needs to withdraw from the European Court of Human Rights, who many Tory MPs see as needlessly meddling in British law after Brexit. It was this court, based in Strasbourg, that stopped the first Rwanda deportation flight in an 11th hour intervention in June. The recently fired Home Secretary, Soheila Braveman, was a vocal critic of the CHR. Her successor, James Cleverley, has said that leaving it is not necessary to ensure a tough approach to immigration. But as the politics play out, asylum seekers are still arriving in significant numbers. So far this year, roughly 26,000 people have been recorded entering the UK on small boats.
