Alcohol-related deaths in the United States jumped by 26% from 2019 to 2020, a report published by the CDC. The increase was sharper among women ages 35 to 44, going up by 42%.

Study finds rate of alcohol mortality rising

A new study on alcohol consumption and risks found a startling statistic. Researchers looked at CDC data between 1999 and 2020 and found that alcohol-related mortality among women is rising faster than men's. That tracks with previous data trends. According to a 2016 analysis of data from the World Health Organization, The U.S. is ranked among the top countries in the world with the smallest gender gaps in alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption has been slowly rising among U.S. adults, and that may be correlated with rising alcohol-related illnesses. And alcohol-related mortality may include death from heart disease, liver disease, cancers, mental and behavioral disorders, and more. Alcohol can carry higher risk for women since it affects their bodies differently. We see that there are significant differences in height and weight between men and women, as well as differences in total body water, and some enzymes and hormones in our bodies that do differ between men and women. Mackenzie Peltier is an assistant professor at the Yale School of Medicine who specializes in researching gender differences with substance abuse and consumption. Generally, women tend to metabolize alcohol more slowly than their male counterparts. And this is important because even if men and women are drinking the same amount of alcohol, women will reach a higher level of blood alcohol content compared to men. Cultural perceptions and pressures for women around alcohol use have changed dramatically throughout the last couple of decades.
