It was nice while it lasted, but I think the most important thing for these borrowers to remember and just to keep in mind is Realizing that over these last 42 months a lot has changed when it comes to student loan repayment So September 1st is when the interest actually started back up on all of these student loans for people across the country But the actual repayment those are set to start up in October Which is actually just a few weeks away the pause on federal student loan payments It really came as a welcome relief to people who were out of work during the height of the pandemic Many of them still in 2023 building back and with inflation still peaking Well, the repayments could put a squeeze on some already strained budgets, but it will help if you plan ahead So the due dates on the repayments those will vary but just know that the first payment is due Next month and you will have to check with your servicer to get both the date and also the amount that you are having to Pay back, but your servicer that actually may be one of those factors that may have changed in the last three years The more organized you are the better you'll be the more protected you'll be Look at old receipts of old payments Identify what your lenders who they are a lot of the service providers have changed And so you need to make sure you make the phone call who is now in charge of my loan What type of loan do I have and really looking to gather some data on that loan? Good advice there to check old receipts make a phone call But you can also check your email and maybe just do an easy keyword search for the words federal student loan just to double check that you know your Servicer because they likely emailed you and just to make sure you haven't missed anything so far So the government also making some exceptions for late payments So the next 12 months the next year are going to be considered the student loan on ramp and during that time your missed payments your late Payments, they won't be reflected on your credit report down the interest that will add up though You won't not escape the interest if borrowers are more than 270 days behind on their payments that will qualify as a default If you were in default before the pandemic you actually get one shot to restore your good standing They're what's called the fresh start program and you can sign up online at my ED debt Ed Gov, I believe you have until the end of this month to get that done It's also a good idea to check your payment through the save plan it's an income based plan that was launched by the White House earlier this year to factor in your family size and not just the Amount that you owe back to the government another thing to keep in mind analysts say the absolute worst thing that you could do is to just ignore these student loans all Together because the Department of Education does have some power They can get their money back by some necessary means they could garnish your paycheck or even take that money from your tax return So you're gonna have to pay that money back either way. It's likely better that it's on your terms and not Uncle Sam's
