At least 15 people are dead after storms that battered parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. It's the latest in what's been two months of an extremely active tornado season in the heart of the country.

The storms have left communities devastated, particularly in Salina, where homes were destroyed, and power lines and trees were downed. Search and rescue crews are actively assessing the damage, and officials fear the number of fatalities may rise. Families in affected areas have reported significant losses, though some were fortunate to avoid the worst of the damage by not being at home during the storm.

Deaths have been reported across Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, and tens of thousands remain without power. The severity of the damage became more evident as daylight arrived, highlighting the extensive impact of the storms. This series of severe weather events follows a historically bad tornado season in April and May for the Midwest and Plains. The weather system responsible for the devastation is expected to move eastwards.

Power lines were down, trees were down, it's taken a huge effort just to get back in there where most of the damage is. Little is left of this neighborhood in Salina. One family lucky to be out of town when the storm hit, their home now a total loss. It was a godsend, we weren't home. The neighbor across the street had an RV and it landed on our house. The only part that's standing is where we would have been sheltered. Deaths have also been reported in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Tens of thousands still without power across all three states. Pretty eye-opening. It's a lot worse than I thought it was initially. Once the sun came up, you realize the magnitude. The scenes of destruction just leave the latest in what has been a historically bad April and May for the Midwest and Plains.
