Ruinous floods and landslides have killed more than 900 people on Indonesia's island of Sumatra, the country's disaster management agency said Saturday, with fears that starvation could send the toll even higher.

In the remote Achia Temiyang on the island of Sumatra, children are climbing over slippery logs and walking for hours to reach aid, a week after cyclone-driven floods and landslides devastated their communities. The deluge washed away entire villages in the rainforest-cloaked region, making roads completely disappear and cutting off supplies. For ten days, Bangga, her sister Ami and their five children were trapped inside their home, surviving only on bread scraps and rainwater. Every night we heard people screaming for help because the water was getting higher, but we couldn't do anything. I shouted because I have a baby, but nobody dared to help and for days we were so lost. Heavy machinery and food convoys only managed to reach the region Thursday, but with aid still moving slowly, authorities fear starvation could push the death toll even higher. Unable to wait, some residents have resorted to looting shops and supermarkets. The goods in the shop, we just had to take them out. We survived because of the looting. Indonesia's military says it's now deploying mobile water purification units and continuing airdrops of food and medicine to communities. Local officials are urging Jakarta to declare a national emergency, a move that would unlock more funding and accelerate rescue and relief operations.
