The vaccine, developed by pharmaceutical firm Biovac in Cape Town, is being tested for safety and effectiveness in comparison to existing vaccines.

Officials describe the trials as a milestone for Africa's capacity to produce its own vaccines. If successful, Biovac could become the world's second producer of the oral cholera vaccine, with the product potentially available in Africa by 2028, pending trial results.

Researchers and scientists in South Africa on Tuesday have launched clinical trials on the first domestically manufactured vaccine in over 50 years. The oral cholera vaccine is being developed by the Cape Town-based pharmaceutical firm Biovac. Authorities have described the clinical trials as a milestone in Africa's ability to fully produce vaccines for itself. We launched the oral cholera vaccine. This is an important vaccine because it's the first end-to-end vaccine we've made on the continent of Africa. And this vaccine will evaluate the safety and how potent the vaccine is against the comparative vaccine. If our vaccine works, we'll be the second producer of the oral cholera vaccine at a global level, and we can help support global distribution and help support places where there are outbreaks. Originally, I'm from Bush Park Ridge, so I do know people who do share water with animals. So I know a few people that have been affected by this cholera. So me being part of this study group is not going to benefit me, myself only. It's still going to benefit each and everyone around the African continent.
