The rising cost of living and widespread unemployment have left families unable to afford basic food and essentials, making these kitchens a critical lifeline rather than a temporary solution.

Despite some humanitarian aid entering Gaza since the recent truce, the amount delivered remains far below what is needed. Residents report that if charity kitchens were to close, they would have no alternative sources of food due to unaffordable market prices.

After the guns fell silent, a new struggle defines daily life in central Gaza where scores of displaced Palestinians, most of them children, lined up on Tuesday with empty pots at charity kitchens for their only guaranteed meal of the day, comprising of simple rice served from a large communal pot into the containers of a weary queue. The rockets and planes stopped, but the rising living costs have been the hardest weapon used against us, given that we are unemployed and most people don't have jobs. We rely on charity kitchens, which provide us once again with only one meal for the entire day. For many, like father of three Mohamed Jeddeli, the charity kitchens are not a temporary relief but a critical lifeline as the soaring market prices for food and essentials have made self-sufficiency impossible for those stripped of their livelihoods. We get food from charity kitchens. There is no alternative to that. Things in the market are expensive. If charity kitchens close, we will be unable to get food from another place. While some humanitarian supplies have trickled into the Gaza Strip since the truce took effect last month, the amount of aid reaching the territory continues to fall drastically short of the overwhelming need.
