In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie breaks down what the weather looks like in the coming days in the United States.

Snowfall in the Northeast is diminishing, with warmer temperatures forecasted to reduce the likelihood of a white Christmas in many areas. Only parts of New England are expected to retain enough cold to sustain snow through the holiday, while most of the region will see above-average temperatures.

Meanwhile, California is preparing for a period of heavy precipitation, with forecasts indicating 10 to 14 feet of snow above 8,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada and significant rainfall in Southern California. This influx of precipitation is critical for the state's water reservoirs but also raises concerns about potential flooding.

Snow dwindles in Northeast, stormy in California

Hi, dwindling snow across the Northeast. Many places are not going to have a white Christmas. It looks like a much warmer pattern compared to what we looked at just a couple days ago. In the West, here comes the rain, not for the Northwest, but in the California. Listen to this, I think in the Sierra up above probably 8,000 feet, there's going to be 10 to 15 feet of snow, 10 to 15 feet of snow in the Sierra up above about 8,000 feet next week. I'll show you why. Let me show you this. This is the snow cover across the U.S. Now we've had a healthy snowpack much, well since Thanksgiving Day, we've been building the snowpack in the North Central U.S. This is the southern part of this is really going to erode. You're going to start eroding it a little bit in the Northeast, I will say this, New England, I think there will be enough cold to sustain this snow through Christmas. The West Coast, I mean, these totals are just nothing. This is bad news. Right now, this is very bad news for California. Northwest, you're going to be picking up your snow this weekend, but I do believe the good news coming for California and the Sierra, you're going to start building the snow. The snow levels would have to come down a little bit, but I'll tell you what, some snow will be building up and above 8,000 feet. I always mention California with the snow because if you want to keep the water restrictions in California at bay, you need Sierra snow. All right, let me take you out to this. I want to show you there's really now going to be a lack of cold air across the country. Let me go to what we're looking at today. Here's your cold front coming toward the East today, pretty good shot of cold air coming in. I mean, this is January cold for a day or so. Watch as we move in the next week. Here's Saturday, look at all the cold air. There's your next shot of cold air. This is the cold front I thought that would set us up for a possibility of some snow and a nice Christmas Eve, Christmas day across parts of the Northeast, but it does retreat. Here's your cold air coming in for Sunday and then Monday, but watch by Monday afternoon. Watch how the cold air retreats. It retreats. Tuesday, it retreats. By the time you get into Tuesday, the only cold air to be found is in here. You just continue to retreat. This is Christmas Eve. Look at all the cold air going away. And then by the time we get into Christmas day, the only cold air is in a couple of spots here. I wouldn't say it's warm across New England, but most of New England, it's above historical averages, but boy, it's going to break out in here in the central US. So your chances for snow in the Northeast and the Midwest are like your snow cover, they're going to dwindle. All right. Now, what were we thinking? Well, I thought earlier in the week, what we would see is that this high pressure system, let's go to Monday, upper level high, watch this, look at the strength of this high as we move forward. Now, I thought this was going to be a little flatter, but as we get into Tuesday, look how strong it is. This is Wednesday morning, Christmas Eve. You've got a big upper high here. Here's your storminess in the West. So it's just going to bake in these areas. It's going to get very warm. Your only cool air will be with this short wave coming across the Northeast. As we get into Christmas Eve, you've got some colder air in, there it is, as we get into Christmas Eve, like we thought, but it's not nearly as strong as I thought it was going to be. So that's the surface pattern Christmas Eve. Here are the temperatures Christmas Eve in the morning. I mean, your 32 degree line is in here, but that's going to be retreating as the day goes by. Now, while we will have a storm coming on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, it's mostly going to be in the form of some light rain. There's the surface map. This is the American model. There it is, little bit of ice coming in Christmas Day into the next day across Northern New England. The European model kind of showing, there it is, little bit of rain. There's your ice across New England. So we're kind of right, there would be some ice across the Northeast, but it's up across New England, farther south, it's going to be rain. Now, it's good news if you're doing any traveling throughout the Northeast on Christmas Day, Christmas Night. So we are getting the storm that we highlighted for you about a week ago, but the cold air is not deep enough for any snow. Now, we're going to keep an eye on it, all right? It's still early in the game, but all indications are there's this upper high in Texas and in the Gulf right in here is so strong that it's like a heat pump and all the cold air stays farther north. Now, in the West, you're going to get a lot of precipitation. Flooding is going to be a concern in the California next week. It was Northwest the last two weeks, now it's going to shift into California. Watch the upper level pattern here. Look at this big dip right in here. This is Tuesday the 23rd. You've got all of this energy coming in toward California. See that? So that it begins over the weekend, and then watch the surface panel. There's Tuesday, here's Christmas Eve, here's Christmas Day, and then you start to dry things out as we head into the next weekend, so almost a week from now. But this is going to be a lot of precipitation for California, and I think Southern California, you're going to get a lot of rain with this. Look at the surface map. This is Tuesday night, this is Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. I think you average about three and a quarter inches of rain during the month of December in Los Angeles. I think you're going to get that. So you had above normal rainfall in November, you're going to end up with at or above normal rainfall in December, and while the snow levels are going to be sky high in the Sierra, the liquid is going to be about 10 to 14 inches. So that tells me in the Sierra, and here's the snow map, this is from now through Christmas Day, I think above 8,000 feet, you're going to get about 10 to 14 feet of snow in the Northern and Central Sierra. Again, it's high, but it's important because it's the snow in the Sierra that melts in the spring and keeps the reservoirs filled in California. Less snow in the Northeast, but 10 to 14 feet of snow in the Sierra. And that's feet.
