The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits should be paid in full this month despite a government shutdown. The Trump administration previously cut off full funding for SNAP after October, prompting lawsuits and judicial orders affecting food access for 42 million Americans.

A recent judicial order required full SNAP funding for November, but the Supreme Court paused this order as it considers the case. State leaders, including Attorney General Keith Ellison, have joined efforts to maintain SNAP funding, while encouraging families to utilize free school meals and local food resources as food insecurity rises.

The Supreme Court expected to make a ruling today on a request from President Donald Trump's administration to keep blocking states from providing full benefits, arguing the money might be needed somewhere else. The Trump administration chose to cut off funding for the program after October due to the shutdown. So that decision sparked lawsuits and a string of judicial rulings that deal with government power and impact the food access for 42 million Americans. The administration went along with a pair of rulings from judges who said the government must provide at least partial funding for snap. So it eventually said recipients would get up to 65% of their regular benefits. But then last week, one of the judges said it must fund the program fully for November. Even if this means digging into the funds, the government said needs to be used somewhere else. The Supreme Court agreed to pause that order. So in response to this here at home, Attorney General Keith Ellison joined a multi state coalition and filing a temporary restraining order to keep those funds flowing. Long run to stand up for the rule of law in American democracy, and that includes the lawful allotment of money, food and resources by Congress to the people of this country. And as food insecurity continues right now, people are trying to figure out how to put groceries on the table. State leaders are encouraging families to have their Children take advantage of free breakfast and lunches in schools and then also visit local food shelves if necessary.
