Over 600 students have been locked out of Liverpool West Public for more than a week, forcing them to learn at a neighbouring school. Now questions are being raised about how so much contaminated mulch ended up on school grounds. Unfortunately, the contractor in question, instead of using soil in the garden beds, actually used the mulch in question as fill. There's been about a thousand tonnes that have been removed and we're talking with the contractor around a possible breach of contract here. It's still not clear when students will be allowed back. I understand it's a matter of weeks, I understand they've very well progressed but I don't have further detail on that. The community garden at this church in Western Sydney is among six new sites to test positive for asbestos. The contaminated mulch was donated by the supplier. Other new sites include a private residence, an aged care home on the Upper North Shore and Bicentennial Park in Sydney's inner west. Bicentennial Park is just the second site to return a positive sample for friable asbestos. While this type is more dangerous, authorities say the specific case here is still low risk. The fibre has been attached and part of the material at the back of a tile, which indicates that it's not available to be aerosolised or breathed in. There's kids playing here near the playground, people walking with their dogs, so it's really upsetting to think that we might be exposed to asbestos. A lot of the places where the asbestos is dumped is not places you'd walk on anyway. Is it overkill? I don't know. The EPA says it's now tested the vast majority of sites of concern, while the criminal investigation into the source of the contamination continues. For more UN videos visit www.un.org
