The explosion early friday morning happened during a move of explosives killing detectives Joshua Kelly Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborne. Two senior law enforcement officials told CBS News those deputies were handling a grenade they had picked up from a Santa Monica garage when it went off. The blast shattered windows in nearby patrol cars and rattled homes. Mandy Rios lives nearby. It was like a boom. I woke up and I was thinking wait a minute I was like oh probably you know fourth of july just passed people are just messing around sending off the noises so I think nothing of it until after later on I started to hear all those the cops and helicopters and then I hear them stopping and it's like oh what's going on. How and why such a high level explosive was moved to the Sheriff's Department in the first place is not known. There's a lot more that we don't know than what we do know but our intent is to look at this from the very beginning and figure out what is it exactly that caused this tragic event. Agents from the ATF and FBI are leading the post blast investigation. The victims were part of the Sheriff's elite arson explosives detail specialists who answer roughly 1100 dangerous calls every year according to the Sheriff. The blast happened on the grounds of the Biscaloose Center Academy training facility. Today puts a face to how dangerous these men and women their job actually is on a daily basis and how something can go tragically wrong at any moment. To the individual I just completed dive school with um so we're very close the better part of two decades smart bright very motivated to work and uh just a pleasure to work with over the years. Three families are now planning funerals while investigators work to ensure an incident like this won't happen again.
