With Florida's so-called Alligator Alcatraz now open, another migrant detention facility roughly 400 miles north of the original is already planned in the Everglades.

Florida has opened a new migrant detention and deportation facility in the Everglades, known as 'Alligator Alcatraz,' with a capacity of up to 3,000 detainees. State officials have also confirmed plans for a second facility at Camp Blanding, a National Guard training base, which will add space for an additional 2,000 detainees.

The opening and expansion of these facilities have drawn criticism from Florida Democrats and advocacy groups, who cite environmental, tribal, and due process concerns. The state government maintains that resources are being managed to avoid environmental harm and that the funding, estimated at $450 million, is considered emergency spending and is expected to be reimbursed by the federal government.

Second detention center planned in Florida Everglades

The so-called Alligator Alcatraz opened to a lot of GOP fanfare and a presidential visit on Tuesday, but now eyes are already turning north to Camp Blanding for a second facility, what Governor Ron DeSantis calls the Northern Outpost. Florida officials said their first migrant detainees could arrive in the Everglades Wednesday. They're quote, waiting on Homeland Security to make the decision, but we are ready to receive them when we get the official go ahead. And they want to go home, so we immediately send them home, you know, where it's appropriate. It comes after Tuesday's opening of the temporary migrant detention and deportation facility dubbed Alligator Alcatraz, a name you can actually find on Apple Maps. We have real concerns about the environmental impact of this facility. It's dangerous. It's inhumane. And this is not who we are as a state. It's totally un-American. It's been condemned by Florida Democrats of all stripes in the state Senate, the state House and Florida's congressional delegation. They were the latest to send this letter calling on the governor to shut down the facility for environmental, tribal and due process concerns, saying in part, quote, Florida's river of grass is no place for a prison. We'll make sure people get the necessary due process. We'll get them in, get them out. Florida Attorney General James Othmeyer first pitched the idea only a couple of weeks ago. It became a reality in just days and will now have a capacity of up to 3,000 detainees. How do you plan to handle the waste from 3,000 individuals without polluting the surrounding wetlands and animals? Sure. A lot of the resources are being brought in and out when it comes to food, sewage, et cetera. Nothing's going into the Everglades. Meanwhile, about 400 miles away, state officials say plans for a second facility at Camp Landing, a training base for the Florida National Guard, are well underway. I would say right after our wonderful Independence Day, we will be starting construction near that facility. You have another big runway there, too. The state says it'll be working to beat that timeline if possible. But once completed, Blanding will be able to handle an additional 2,000 detainees for a total state capacity of 5,000. That's as protests continue and petitions circulate urging the Sunshine State to sunset these facilities. And there remains a lot of questions about how Florida is paying for all of this. Recent estimates put it at about $450 million to convert these sites into migrant detention and deportation facilities. But the state of Florida says that is emergency money and reimbursable by the federal government. That's the latest here at the State Capitol. I'm Forrest Somers reporting.
