His brother, Amine Kassassi, is a well-known activist against drug trafficking in Marseille and had recently been under police protection following threats. This is the second time Amine has lost a brother to violence linked to drug trafficking, and authorities are investigating whether the murder was intended as a warning. The suspects remain at large.

It was 2.30 in the afternoon when two people on a motorcycle shot and killed a 20-year-old man in Marseille. The victim was in his parked car in front of this pharmacy in a working class neighbourhood. A school student who witnessed the scene on Thursday was still shaken the day after. I was coming home from school and I saw a lot of police officers and a sheet on the ground. I found it shocking. I didn't understand. Why him? Why here? Because it's quiet here. I thought someone could shoot me just because I live here. The style of the attack recalls drug-related gangland killings. Yet the young victim was not known to police. His name was Mohamed Kassassi. His older brother Amine Kassassi is publicly committed to fighting drug trafficking in the French city. The prosecutor is not ruling out that the murder could have been meant as a warning. This 20-year-old man has no direct or indirect connection to narcotrafficking except through his brother Amine who is indeed very involved in the fight. To get someone who's committed to fighting drug trafficking, would that cross the line? If that were the case, we could clearly say that we'd be at a tipping point. An environmental activist, Amine Kassassi had already lost a half-brother who was murdered in connection with drug trafficking at the end of 2020. He then became president of an association that helps the families of murder victims in Marseille where drug-related violence is widespread. The local community was in shock. I know the fight of Amine on behalf of the victim's families, so this makes us all the more sad. Their mom is going to bury two children in four years. It's unimaginable. Amine Kassassi had just published a book on drug trafficking in Marseille. And for the past month he had been under police protection following threats. A burned-out motorcycle was found in the city. The two perpetrators are still at large and are actively being sought.
