Accompanied by facility officials and Department of Homeland Security personnel, the representatives inspected areas including holding cells, the cafeteria, and medical facilities.

Both lawmakers reported that the facility appeared well-maintained during their visit, though they acknowledged that conditions may differ outside of official tours. While they did not observe specific problems, they expressed ongoing concerns about federal immigration policies and emphasized the importance of transparency and oversight. ICE officials welcomed the visit, stating it provided an opportunity for open dialogue and accurate representation of facility conditions.

Well, today, two local Congress members tour the Otay Mesa Detention Facility where immigrants in ice custody are being housed. Congress members, Sarah Jacobs and Scott Peters toured the facility this morning. ABC 10 News reporter Laura Acevedo spoke exclusively to both representatives immediately after the tour. I'm told this tour lasted about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. I was waiting for Congressman Peters and Congresswoman Jacobs as they finished their tour. They tell me what they saw inside. Just before noon Friday, Congressman Scott Peters exited the Otay Mesa Detention Facility. Not far behind was his colleague, Sarah Jacobs. Both toured the facility led by the warden and senior members of the Department of Homeland Security. I didn't know what to expect. Um, and, you know, of course, we went with the critical eyes. We know when we show up, they clean it up for us. It's much nicer than what it normally is. And we've heard very concerning reports from people inside and their family members. The pair says the visit was part of their congressional oversight, touring areas like the holding facilities, cafeteria and medical facilities. When ice brings them in, they get, they get food, they get services, they have medical services, they get to talk to their lawyer after spending time inside. Here were their biggest takeaways. I didn't see any particular problems with this facility. That doesn't mean I'm happy at all with the Trump administration, what they're doing. We have some questions that were waiting on follow up that they had to get some more information to us. But in general, I would say that the level of transparency was was sufficient. Despite being satisfied with what they saw Friday, they are highly critical of President Trump's hard line approach on immigration, saying they brought in questions and concerns directly from their community. Congressman Peters says he spoke with a detained Afghan refugee inside who he says helped U. S. Troops in conflict. This facility is treating him okay and um you know, I'm heartbroken that he has to go through this. Jacob says she also toured this very same facility during the biden administration. We are doing our oversight job, making sure we're showing up, asking questions that they are at least following the laws and protocols as they are in place now. In a statement, the new ice E. R. O. Field office director for San Diego, Patrick Diver, said in part that ice welcomes these types of visits that provide an opportunity to offer an accurate and transparent view of the facility, adding that they value ongoing dialogue and look forward to strengthening their relationship with the congressional delegation at the Otay Mesa Detention Facility.
