Resumed war sends wave of wounded into Gaza hospitals

Within hours of a truce running out, the wounded start pouring into Gaza's already overwhelmed hospitals. At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, the second largest in the strip, a steady stream of injured children and adults were brought in on Friday. On the steps outside, people weep and pray beside the bodies of those who didn't make it. Barely two hours after the cease-fire ended, with no deal to replace it, Gaza health officials reported 54 people killed in Israeli strikes, a number that was rising rapidly. Each side said the other had rejected terms to extend the truce. These wounded were rushed into a hospital in nearby Rafah. Medics and witnesses said the bombing was most intensive there and in Khan Younis, areas that were supposed to be safe, where hundreds of thousands of Gazans have been sheltering from fighting further north. Leaflets dropped on eastern areas of Khan Younis on Friday ordered residents of four towns to evacuate to Rafah. This man, who didn't give his name, says they were asleep in Yebna refugee camp when it was bombed, leaving dozens under the rubble, he says. Aid groups in the United Nations say a fraction of health facilities in the devastated enclave are still functioning, and they're in no shape to cope with an influx of casualties. Speaking from Gaza City, World Health Organization senior emergency officer Rob Holden described the conditions in hospitals there. The only way to describe it, it's like a horror movie. When you walk in there, there are patients on the floor with the most traumatic injuries that you can imagine, essentially battlefield trauma. The patients are given the best possible care, but the number of staff available is relatively small. Many of the staff have fled with their families or have been killed. Gaza had 2.3 million residents before Israel began its bombardment and ground invasion in response to the October 7th rampage by Hamas, when Israel says gunmen killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages. Palestinian health authorities that the UN deems credible say more than 15,000 Gazans have been confirmed killed and thousands more are missing and feared buried under the rubble. Rocket sirens also blared across southern Israel as militants fired from Gaza into towns.
