This move follows the withdrawal of Democrat Colin Allred, who opted to run for a newly drawn congressional seat instead.

Crockett's candidacy is seen as a significant challenge, as it has been over 30 years since a Democrat won a statewide seat in Texas. Republicans have responded enthusiastically, viewing her as a progressive and potentially vulnerable candidate, while questions remain about the likelihood of a runoff in the race.

to Texas now for a last-minute shakeup in a key Senate race. A source tells CBS News Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett is launching her campaign. We're told Crockett filed paperwork hours before the deadline for candidates to run in the March 3rd primary. Now this all comes as Democrat Colin Allred announced he is dropping out instead of running for a newly drawn congressional seat in the House. Let's bring in CBS News reporter Shauna Mazzell live for us now from Dallas. Shauna, it's been more than 30 years since a Democrat has won a statewide seat in Texas. How are Republicans viewing Crockett's candidacy here? Since a Democrat has won a statewide race here in the state of Texas, so Crockett certainly has a tall task ahead of her. We are expecting her to take the stage behind us in about 30 more minutes central time, but Republicans are really excited about her jumping into this race because they see Crockett as a progressive candidate. They see her as someone that will be vulnerable and a lot of them have been coming out and making statements in the hours since Crockett filed that candidacy paperwork. I want to read to you some of those statements. First let's go to Ken Paxton. Paxton is the Attorney General of Texas but he's also running for this Senate seat and he says everyone knows Crockett will be soundly defeated. We're six months out from a runoff and Cornyn's already stolen 40 million that should have gone to Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan, etc. He went on to say that Cornyn wants to sacrifice the majority by spending a hundred million on losing a primary race and saying that this is beyond selfish. There have been questions on whether or not Republicans could see a runoff election in this race as well. Yeah I want to lean into that for a second here Shawna because tell us about who Crockett will likely face in this primary and why there will likely be a runoff here. Well if you ask me that question a few days ago the answer would have been completely different. A few days ago you had Colin Allred still in the race but he actually dropped out as Jasmine Crockett was going through this process mulling whether or not she was going to run for Senate. Colin Allred dropped out. So you still have James Tallarico. Tallarico actually rose to prominence over the summer during the redistricting efforts. He's been a very vocal democrat and he's also proved his ability to raise a lot of money in a short amount of time. But some people are saying that democrats need to be united going into the midterm election. Shawna Mazzell. Always great to see you. Thanks so much.
