Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva reported that she was pepper sprayed by ICE agents during a raid at a restaurant in Tucson, Arizona. Grijalva released a video on social media describing the incident, stating that around 40 masked ICE agents arrived and that she, along with two staff members, were sprayed and pushed while seeking clarification as members of Congress.

The Department of Homeland Security, through spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, denied Grijalva's account, stating she was only in the vicinity of someone being pepper sprayed while they were allegedly obstructing and assaulting law enforcement. Grijalva described the agents as rude and disrespectful and emphasized her right to seek clarification during the incident.

We just came up on a community that was protecting their people. We had, I would say maybe 40 ice agents, most of them masked in several vehicles that the community had stopped right here, right in the middle of the street because they were afraid that they were taking people without due process, without any kind of notice. And so I was here, this is like the restaurant I come to literally once a week, and was sprayed in the face by a very aggressive agent, pushed around by others. When I literally was not being aggressive, I was asking for clarification, which is my right as a member of Congress. Grijalva says two members of her staff were also pepper sprayed and says she identified herself as a member of Congress to the agents and described some of them as being quote rude and disrespectful. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin fired back on social media and denied Grijalva was pepper sprayed, writing in part, quote, she was in the vicinity of someone who was pepper sprayed as they were obstructing and assaulting law enforcement.
