OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has warned lawmakers in Washington they must regulate the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence before it’s too late. Altman, whose company created the free chatbot tool ChatGPT, is the latest AI pioneer to warn about the potential dangers of a technology some fear could soon surpass human intelligence.

My worst fears are that we cause significant... We, the field, the technology, the industry, cause significant harm to the world. Sam Altman, a pioneer in the now exploding world of AI. His resume includes creating the AI text generator, chatGPT, testified to US senators along with other AI experts that the technology's potential for disinformation and manipulation needs government oversight. Given that we're going to face an election next year and these models are getting better, I think this is a significant area of concern. These new systems are going to be destabilizing. They can and will create persuasive lies at a scale humanity has never seen before. In hearing the urgent call for federal regulation, US lawmakers acknowledged their weak track record on such stuff demands that they now step it up. Congress failed to meet the moment on social media. Now we have the obligation to do it on AI before the threats and the risks become real. The experts also underlined that these are still early days for artificial intelligence. For example, it's not yet self-aware. But they said it will get better, it will get more powerful.
