Smith, who began the day two shots behind, recovered from a late stumble but missed a crucial five-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

The final group, including Korea's Siwoo Kim, traded the lead throughout the day, while Minwoo Lee and Rory McIlroy finished tied for 14th. Adam Scott was the top Australian finisher in fifth place. The event concluded with Niergaard-Petersen holing a key par putt on the last hole to secure the championship.

Day four, getting the best of some of the field, Minwoo Lee struggled with the putter. Finishing with five bogeys, dropping to tied 14th with world number two Rory McIlroy. Adam Scott flying the flag in fifth. As the final three each took a turn with the lead throughout the day, by the 14th it was the Queenslander versus the Dane. At the penultimate hole, Smith had a wobble. But remarkably recovered. The Dane unlucky with this near miss to pull one shot ahead, as Smith completed the recovery sinking for birdie. It would come down to the final hole and the visitor came up wobbly. But he recovered, holing this beauty for par. What a pass, Niergaard-Petersen forced in.
