A severe hailstorm has swept across Brisbane, leaving a trail of destruction and a rare winter 'ice' covering. It's being compared to the storm that hit Brisbane during July 2017.

Brisbane experienced an unusual winter hailstorm, with mounds of hail inundating homes, gardens, and vehicles. The storm arrived suddenly, prompting residents to seek shelter and causing significant clean-up efforts, particularly in areas like Oxley and 17 Mile Rocks. 

Authorities noted that this was the first time since 2017 that a severe storm warning had been issued for Brisbane in July. While the hailstones were not especially large, measuring around two to three centimetres, the volume of ice was significant and left many residents describing the event as unprecedented for the winter season.

For the Barrett family at 17 Mile Rocks, a relaxing Saturday is now clean-up Saturday. Ice surrounded their home, it blocked their garage door, so their car was peppered. Yeah, just a constant roar. Like, I couldn't even hear. Yeah, we couldn't even talk to each other. It was unusual. Last night was the first time a severe storm warning has been issued near Brisbane in July since 2017. There was rain damage, but the hail wasn't large, mostly around two to three centimetres. Yeah, I've never witnessed anything like that before, ever. At least in winter. Matt Johnston, 10 News.
