At this stage we know that this evening Queensland Labor's Administrative Committee will meet to formally open nominations for the leadership for the next Premier, the 40th Premier of this state. Now we know that Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk yesterday said when she would retire at the end of this week she would endorse Deputy Premier Stephen Miles to take over the top job. She said he would be a good leader, he is a strong person and a compassionate person. However it's up to the Labor caucus to decide and what we do know is that Health Minister Shannon Fentiman and Treasurer Cameron Dick are also tipped to throw their hat in the ring for the top job. Now we know that Brittany Lorga, Keppel MP, has already thrown her support behind Health Minister Shannon Fentiman even though she's yet to confirm she will run for the leadership. Now Shannon Fentiman and Stephen Miles are from the same faction of the Labor Party, the dominant left faction and Treasurer Cameron Dick is from the right faction. Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has said the way this transition of power has been handled has left a bitter taste in the mouth of Queenslanders. What is disappointing and what Queenslanders are telling me is they feel uncomfortable about the way it's been handled. To have three of her colleagues so actively undermining her, to have factional power brokers deciding who will be the next Premier at a time when the state really needs leadership, that's what sits uncomfortably with me. Now this raises questions about how both Labor and the LNP will deal with this transition of power this week as we head into the state election next year. Labor will likely seek to resolve the leadership as soon as possible and have the most smooth transition possible. It will try to avoid a projected leadership battle and the LNP will obviously try to put itself forward as the best party to lead the state next election. It's already saying it's a united front, a united team and we're heading to the next election so the MPs will make their decision about who will lead the Labor Party as Premier this Friday.
