Dozens of protesters filled central Paris on Tuesday to condemn a surge in gender-based violence and pay tribute to victims. The demonstration came just hours before the government received a major new report calling for radical reform of how the justice system handles domestic abuse cases. The report recommends testing a new type of magistrate dedicated solely to intrafamilial violence cases. We continue to have women who file complaints, we continue to have women who ask for help and who, in spite of this, are not protected, are not sheltered, due to lack of means and lack of political will to structurally eradicate these violence. In 2024, 107 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner nationwide, representing an 11% increase from the previous year. Recent government data shows that every day in France, more than three women are victims of femicide or attempted femicide. Women aged 70 and above represented 26% of victims and 9% increase in one year. Despite political commitments, many protesters say the situation for women in France is deteriorating.
