Pope Leo is set to visit Delacroix Psychiatric Hospital, a church-run facility north of Beirut that cares for around 800 patients. The hospital, operated by Franciscan nuns since 1952, is one of the few mental health institutions in Lebanon, where psychiatric patients face significant social stigma and state hospitals suffer from severe underfunding.

Hospital staff and patients are preparing for the Pope's visit with a choir recital and fresh renovations. Staff members expressed hope that the visit will bring much-needed recognition to psychiatric patients and highlight the challenges faced by Lebanon's mental health sector, which has endured decades of instability and financial hardship.

Established in 1952, the church-run hospital is one of only a few mental health facilities in Lebanon. The hospital, north of Beirut, is run by nuns from the Franciscan Order who care for around 800 patients. Leo will visit on the last day of his first trip abroad. The building is being freshly painted and about 50 patients are practicing for a choir recital in his honour. In Lebanon, people diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses can experience social stigma and state hospitals are severely underfunded. Mother Marie Makhlouf told Reuters the state pays $15 per day for each psychiatric patient, a fifth of the actual cost. I can't explain it, but this grace that's coming to us is going to embrace us, change us and make us feel that we are not abandoned at a time when we are really struggling to secure what needed to be secured. The Pope comes and visits us to tell us that what you are doing is sacred. The hospital has also survived decades of instability, financial collapse and war with the last six years particularly challenging. Director of the hospital, Sister Rose Hanna, says Leo's visit gives recognition to patients at last. His Holiness the Pope, just by visiting De La Croix Hospital, that's proof he cares about mental and psychological illnesses. And this is something that still here in Lebanon people don't really know how to take care of very well. They don't visit, there are many families who don't visit or people who don't care about this marginalised group. The church hopes the visit will deliver a message that they exist and they can be seen and heard.
