The leaders of Turkey and Poland met in Ankara to discuss strengthening Turkey-Poland relations, Turkey-EU ties during the Polish presidency of the European Council and regional issues including Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suggested that Turkey could play a significant role in facilitating peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. During a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Tusk highlighted the mutual desire for peace shared by both Turkey and Poland following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Since the onset of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Poland's position has been clear in seeking a resolution and peace, a stance which Tusk reiterated during the meeting.

In the press conference, Erdogan underlined Turkey's strategic aim of joining the European Union, presenting it as a pivotal move for the EU's own stabilization and growth. Erdogan expressed that Turkey's full membership in the EU would be essential for the Union to maintain and increase its influence. The leaders of Turkey and Poland also took the opportunity to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and Turkey-EU ties during Poland's upcoming presidency of the European Council, in addition to the Ukraine situation.

In the case of Ukraine and Russia, Poland's position is obvious, known since the first days of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Just like Turkey, Poland wants as soon as possible a break-up and peace. Erdogan emphasised that membership of the European Union is a strategic goal of Turkey, saying if the European Union wants to prevent and even reverse a loss of power and altitude, it can only do so with Turkey's full membership.
