Medical experts in the U.S. say they do not believe a man who had received a pig kidney transplant died because of the transplanted organ. Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital announced 62-year-old Rick Slayman’s death a few days ago.

Medical experts in the United States have stated their belief that the death of a man who had undergone a revolutionary pig kidney transplant was not due to the transplant itself. Rick Slayman, 62, who received the world’s first pig kidney transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, passed away recently, as announced by the hospital. Despite the unfortunate outcome, there is no evidence to suggest that the transplanted organ was a contributing factor to his death. 

Dr. Leonardo Riella, who oversees kidney transplants at the hospital, observed that blood and urine tests conducted on the day of Slayman’s death indicated that the transplanted kidney was functioning properly. Slayman, who suffered from end-stage renal disease, received a kidney from a genetically edited pig, an approach hailed as a significant advancement due to its potential to increase the availability of organs for transplantation.

eGenesis, a startup company, provided Slayman's pig kidney. eGenesis CEO, Dr. Mike Curtis, described Slayman as a “relatively complicated patient” with various health issues including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. He suggested that cardiovascular disease might be the most straightforward hypothesis for Slayman's death, a theory currently under examination by medical teams.

This transplant comes against the backdrop of more than 100,000 people in the US awaiting organ transplants, with kidneys being the most sought-after organ, as indicated by data from the United Network for Organ Sharing. The family of Rick Slayman expressed that his participation in this experimental procedure has inspired many and hope that his legacy will contribute to the advancement of medical science. Emphasizing the importance of learning from this experiment, Dr. Curtis highlighted the necessity of continuing to explore this field rather than being overly cautious.

Kidney was functioning well. He was making urine. Dr. Mike Curtis is the CEO of eGenesis, the startup which provided Slayman's pig kidney. He was a relatively complicated patient, right? He had a reasonable cardiovascular risk. He had metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia. So the simple hypothesis is, is there something from cardiovascular disease that could be playing in into his loss of life? I think that's the simplest hypothesis and something that the teams are exploring. More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for an organ transplant with kidneys in the greatest demand. That's according to a data tracker maintained by the United Network for Organ Sharing. In a statement, Slayman's family said they took comfort knowing that he had inspired so many people. I think the best way we can honor Mr. Slayman's legacy is to learn from this experiment, learn from this procedure and inform what we do next. I think the worst thing we can do is become too conservative and stop.
