Coin collectors and experts suggest that the penny may become a valuable collector's item in the future, especially those minted before 1982 which contain copper. While stores will continue to accept pennies, their value as collectibles is expected to rise gradually as they become less common in circulation.

News 12's Greg Thompson tells us what comes next for the penny, now that the government has stopped making them. According to the government, it costs almost four cents to make one penny. The reason the only ones now left are the barrels and tubs of them we all have lying around. Does that mean that if I keep this penny 20 years from now, will that penny be worth 100 pennies? For sure it's going to be worth a lot down the line. It's not just their two cents. At one on White Plains Road, owner Nick Isaacov says, when it comes to old coins, It's a huge market. and the penny will fit right in. Like all things discontinued, eventually they become collector's items. You're looking at a millionaire, New York. But how much is a penny actually going to be worth? Well, this right here is a three-cent coin from 1870. It's going for between $20 and $30, but it might be worth even more. Maybe with time, it'll be worth a dollar, maybe a little bit more. I mean, if you think about it, it's not much, but turning a penny into a dollar, that's... Still, Isaacov says, like any investment, it won't happen overnight. People have jars of pennies at home, so it'll take time before you can cash them in. And the value will depend on some things. Pennies from before 1982 were made with copper. The ones after were made with zinc. Copper is about $4 a pound. Zinc is nowhere near that. Now, stores will still accept them, so you can always just spend your pennies. But Isaacov says he'll be holding on to a few. You're going to see them pop up on eBay fairly quickly. It's going to be cheap at first, and then get a little more expensive gradually. It might make sense to also start saving nickels, which cost even more than pennies to make. In Williamsbridge, Greg Thompson, News 12.
