A new mural in north-eastern Paris revives the spirit of legendary entertainer, activist and French resistance member Josephine Baker, and her love for both her country, the United States, and her elected home city, Paris.

A mural dedicated to Josephine Baker has been unveiled in north-eastern Paris, commemorating her enduring influence as an entertainer, civil rights activist, and resistance fighter. The artwork was created by French street artist FKDL, who aimed to highlight Baker's symbolic role as a figure of freedom and resilience. 

Baker's son, Brian, attended the unveiling and reflected on his mother's legacy, emphasizing her humanitarian work and commitment to diversity. The mural is part of a series of recent artworks in the neighbourhood, celebrating Baker's connection to Paris and her lasting impact.

The fame of entertainer, civil rights activist and resistance fighter Josephine Baker has only grown in the decades since her death. Now Baker's spirit is being revived in Paris in a mural. Behind the enormous painting is French street artist FKDL. Josephine Baker has always been for me a somewhat iconic figure of that era, both wild and free-spirited but also deeply connected to music, musicals and dance. All things I'm particularly sensitive to, both aesthetically and in terms of lifestyle and the freedoms she embodied. Above all she was an extraordinary character, an incredible woman. The artwork, situated in north-eastern Paris, represents Baker and the words I have two loves, my country and Paris. Born in the US, Baker fled from racism and segregation to Paris in 1925, where her stardom took off. I like my work to have meaning. I focus on bringing women back into the urban landscape. About 95% of the characters I use are women. I consider myself a committed, openly feminist artist. So Josephine Baker is a powerful and symbolic figure, one I find particularly compelling to work with. Baker's son Brian was present at the unveiling on Saturday to see the mural depicting his mother's face. My mother wouldn't have liked words like iconic, star or celebrity. She would have said no, no, let's keep it simple. I lived my life, I had some artistic success, I got involved politically and above all humanly. And I was a rainbow mother to 12 children, to show the world, the planet. And I created a little United Nations. The mural of Baker, meant to symbolize freedom and resistance, is among several painted in recent days in this bustling and diverse neighbourhood of her beloved city.
