France switched on Christmas lights on the Champs-Élysées as the French readied themselves for the upcoming holiday. The 400 trees along the avenue were decked out in environmental-friendly lights and will be lit up each evening until January 7.

Cheers and applause on the Champs-Élysées as the avenue's Christmas lights were switched on, kicking off the holiday season. Tens of thousands gathered on the world-famous avenue, which, on Sunday, was reserved for pedestrians. It was very joyful, in fact it was very moving to see so many residents of Paris and particularly so many children together among those symbolic lights because I don't need to tell you that we're living in times where people need light. The ceremony saw 400 trees decked out in lights. Among those in attendance were Paris' mayor, Anne Hidalgo, and the president of the Champs-Élysées committee, who says the group opted for environmentally friendly decorations. There are no restrictions as the lights are particularly environmentally friendly. Since 2007, we've reduced the use of electricity by changing processes, equipment and supply. The avenue, which is visited by tens of thousands of people every day, will be lit up each evening until January 7th.
