From Western capitals and university campuses to Gaza's territorial waters, protests have drawn millions of people, largely because of Palestinian journalists and storytellers documenting war crimes while struggling to survive in Gaza, carrying first-hand accounts of Israel's genocide. I think we've started to see some outlets being more willing to use terms like occupation, a siege or a settlement straightforwardly rather than using euphemisms, partly under pressure from their own staff and from the audiences. Journalists say that Israel's influence on narratives in the global media is diminishing, and this change will not be easily reversed. One of Israel's key powers, even superpowers, over the last seven decades have been their ability to, let's say, suppress public opinion, their public relations, marketing to make Israel look like a, between quotes, democratic state. And the solidarity movement has completely shattered that. Beyond boycotts of Israeli and pro-Israeli businesses, the solidarity movement was key in pushing several Western countries to recognize Palestine as a state. The cultural shift is undeniable, seen in stages, in stadiums and even among voices that previously supported Israel. It's a momentum activists are determined to maintain and build on. They fear people may shift their attention away and warn. The struggle for justice and independence is far from over, even with a ceasefire in place. People should understand it as a form of narrative warfare designed to this massive bubble of support that has been built to make it smaller and smaller and push it out of sight. And this is why people need to continue not just doing what they were doing over the last two years, but building on it. Activists say any impact will take time to measure and will need to be transformed into a global political power to pressure Israel, hold it accountable and achieve Palestinian freedom. And Palestinians say they will need strong leaders to utilize this solidarity. This day, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, is a reminder that Palestinians rely on global support to bring about change.
