The most shocking thing about these images are that they've become the norm, not the exception in the occupied West Bank. This is four-year-old Fadl Abu Alaya. He tells us he was scared, almost certain he would be arrested. I told the soldier to pay attention because I have a child with me. He told me to shut up. Here, children grow up too fast, too soon. But even kids who dare and go out to play can get in trouble. Abdel Fattah Al Karaki is nine years old. Mohamed is six. The brothers were playing football near their home when armed Israeli soldiers detained them. Terrified. But no one is allowed to approach, console or calm the children down. The soldiers escorted the children to their home. They released the boys after warning them that they were near an Israeli military zone, a zone that is their neighbourhood. This is the old city of Hebron, where hundreds of Israeli soldiers are deployed to protect Israeli settlers in the area. The brothers find a safe place here, in a library. Breathe, the librarian says, and the boys do. A rare chance to relax, open up and share their fears. Abir Isayli calls it therapy through storytelling. Our children go through a lot, us too. We are in a sensitive place with army and settlers, so we stick by one another. We try to help with words, compassion and care. Under military occupation, families have little means to protect their children. A walk in the neighbourhood or a school commute could suddenly turn traumatic. Children learn that safety is never guaranteed and that fear is constant. But they have a community, teaching them to find light in smaller places. Neda Ibrahim, Al Jazeera.
