After a bulldozer breaches the door, two men emerge with their hands raised in a sign of surrender. They hold up their shirts to show they are unarmed. Uniformed men, identified in Israeli media as officers of Israel's border police, then approach them. One officer appears to kick the men and then seems to order them back into the building under the damaged door. A few seconds later, as the two suspects are crawling away, the officers are heard opening fire and the men slump to the ground. A day later, blood still marks the spot where the two Palestinian men were killed. Qassem Abdallah came here to mourn the death of his 26-year-old brother Montasir. The Israelis claim he was wanted, and the other guy too, but they raised their hands and surrendered. They could have arrested them, but no. They took them inside and assassinated them there, because they didn't want the cameras to see. I was shocked when I saw this video. In the statement, the Israeli military responded to the incident, saying it is, quote, under review by the commanders on the ground and will be transferred to the relevant professional bodies. Israeli media since reported that one of the officers involved was under investigation over the incident. Israel maintains the two men were terrorists. The militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad confirmed that the two dead men were indeed fighters in its armed wing, the Al-Quds Brigades. But critics say this does not justify the actions by Israeli forces. A person is a terrorist, you have to charge them. You have to bring them before Troya. If they resist, you are allowed to shoot them, but here we didn't see any resistance from after they surrendered. A question, Mark looms, ever whether this will have any consequences for the Israeli officers involved in the shooting. Human rights organisations have long decried a rising level of impunity of Israeli settlers and soldiers alike when it comes to the killings of Palestinians. They fear this could be yet another example.
