More than 1,000 climate activists from the climate change protest group, the Extinction Rebellion were arrested on Saturday for blocking a major highway in The Hague. The police reportedly managed to remove the protesters from the A12 in the late afternoon, who had gathered to denounce the impact of fossil fuel subsidies on the economy and environment.

Police used water cannons to clear the road but they failed to disperse the crowds. The environmental protest group which was founded in the UK in 2018 claims the Dutch government is spending five times the budget dedicated to fighting climate change on the fossil fuel sector. Our correspondent Vincenzo Ginovese sent this report from The Hague. The protesters are asking the Dutch government to stop financing fossil fuel companies and to stop the extra profits of these companies in action against climate change. They are also asking the government to establish a city assembly to decide how the Netherlands can become neutral from a climate point of view by 2025.
