Gordon Anderson, among the first emergency medical technicians in San Diego, has retired after 58 years of service. Anderson began his career before EMTs and paramedics were formally recognized, starting with only a basic first aid card. 

Throughout his career, Anderson responded to major emergencies, including the Witch Creek fire, but he values the everyday interactions with patients most. Colleagues describe him as a mentor and a staple in the industry, and Anderson credits his team and family as central to his career and ongoing life.

After decades of working, Gordon's finally retiring from his job as an EMT. 58 years ago, there were no EMTs and no paramedics. We started out with a basic first aid card, and I took it from there. Photos with headsets hung on picture frames showing what Gordon cared about and who meant most to him. This is exactly who I am, to be real honest. I love to help people. Gordon spent his career responding to large emergencies, like the Witch Creek fire back in 2007. But what he remembers are the smaller day-to-day interactions. It's not the big major events. It's the one patient at a time that you take care of. And as you do that, it means a whole lot more to you. Some, like Mike Rice, have known Gordon for their entire careers. I'm happy for him because I don't think there will ever be anybody like him. And I think he has established himself as such a staple in our industry. And I'm just very proud to have been able to come up through the industry at a time where I got to call him a colleague and a mentor. At the end of the day, Gordon says his colleagues and his family are his priority. My team, the people that I work with, they meant a lot to me. They still mean a lot to me.
