Other top contenders in the film category include 'Blue Moon,' 'Begonia,' and 'Marty Supreme.' On the television side, 'The White Lotus' received six nominations, with 'Adolescence' also recognized.

This year's Golden Globes feature new and continued categories such as Best Podcast and Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Notable snubs include 'Wicked for Good,' as well as major stars and shows like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, and HBO's 'The Gilded Age.' The 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ on January 11th.

'One Battle After Another' leads 2026 Golden Globes nominations

One battle after another starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie is leading the 2026 Golden Globe nominations with a whopping nine nods. It's up for the coveted Best Picture, Musical or Comedy Award alongside period piece Blue Moon, Begonia starring Emma Stone, Marty Supreme starring Timothee Chalamet and the others you see on your screen. On the TV side, The White Lotus leads with six nominations. The three season satire set in a Thai resort is up against The Pit, Severance, The Diplomat and the other shows you see on your screen as well. Brent Lang joins us now. He's an executive editor for Variety. So Brent, as we've seen, the most nominated don't always win. What makes these stand out though from most nominating film to most nominated series? I mean, you're absolutely right. Often voters have a different idea about what should actually win. In this case, I actually think one battle after another is in a very, very good place. It's dominated a lot of the critics awards has great reviews, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson are beloved. I think it's in a very strong position. And then of course you have White Lotus. I think that's a little bit weaker. Adolescence, which is right underneath that with five nominations, that seems like it's gonna have a very, very good night. Best podcast is a new award this year. Also best standup special, best cinematic and box office achievement. Those were new categories last year. Those are still continued into this year. What's notable about these newer categories? Well, I think there's a couple of things that are notable. I would say on the podcast front, what's notable is that most of these were more sort of comedies, Amy Poehler, Smart List, those things. Not a lot of political podcast within that mix. And then I would also say in terms of the box office, it's a very bizarre category. You have some things that are to be expected. And then you have some things like K-pop Demon Hunter, which was barely in movie theaters and Avatar Fire and Ash, which hasn't even opened yet. Well, I think the whole issue of Netflix and whether they put movies up at the theaters only long enough for awards, that's circling around the segment that we just did, right? With Warner Brothers Discovery. I think it's gonna be a big discussion in Hollywood right now. Right. So, all right, let's talk snubs. What stood out to you and what's not on the list? I think the biggest snub was probably Wicked for Good. I think that that seemed like kind of a slam dunk in that musical comedy category. It was left out of the nominations. That probably doesn't bode well for its Oscar chances. And then also J. Kelly and Netflix. And then you have a number of big names like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez being overlooked, and some HBO shows like Task and The Gilded Age, which really came up empty-handed. And I think a lot of people were expecting that they would do a lot better. Interesting. All right, Brent Lang, thanks for breaking it down for us.
