Out of the schoolyard and onto the front line, NSW Police has its sights set on the next generation of cops, targeting Year 10 and 11 students who are contemplating dropping out of school. Yeah, it'd be a bit odd, seeing a 16 year old cop, but you know, fair play if they want to get into it. They're not worldly enough, you know. You've got to have a bit of, I won't say common sense, but you've just got to live the bit. The strategy is yet to be officially rolled out, but it won't see teenagers armed with guns patrolling the streets at night. A similar program is already used in Western Australia, where applicants can apply at the age of 16, but can't start cadet school until 17. And to be eligible, they need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. There is no way we will be putting these people in harm's way. Well, it probably keeps them off the street maybe. Something to have a purpose, and we need them anyhow. There are around 2,500 job vacancies within the NSW Police Force, and while this recruitment drive is in its earliest stages, it's hoped it could attract young people to a long, meaningful career. We think it's a great opportunity to identify some of those who would like a career as a police officer, give them exposure to the role of police officer.
