Crews are back on the scene of an out-of-control wildfire burning in Nova Scotia's Annapolis County today. The blaze near Long Lake has grown to an estimated 2,063 hectares, or roughly 20 square kilometres, the Department of Natural Resources says.

Despite rainfall, the fire continues to burn out of control, moving closer to evacuated homes. Over 2,000 hectares have been affected, and more than 100 homes have been evacuated, though no homes have been damaged or destroyed. Firefighters from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and local volunteers are working to contain the blaze, supported by water bombers and helicopters. Some campers and trailers have been lost, and a recent helicopter crash related to the firefighting efforts left one person hospitalized and recovering.

And the CBC's Brett Raskin is following those developments for us. He joins us now live from Halifax. Hey, Brett, so what more can you tell us about the fire situation right now? Yeah, Arthi, we saw that rain overnight. We thought it might be enough to try to knock down this fire a little bit. But right now, fire crews still working hard and that fire is still very intense and very large indeed. Again, more than 2,000 hectares in size, 77 Department of Natural Resources firefighters, as well as a crew from Ontario, a crew from PEI, and then some local volunteer firefighters are working on the ground there with four water bombers in the air, two helicopters, a DNR helicopter on reserve as well, again, trying to keep this fire or get this fire under control as it moves towards some buildings. We know that there has been 107 homes evacuated and that the fire hasn't damaged or destroyed any of those homes, but it has claimed some campers or trailers out in the woods there along some lakefront properties in that area. So crews are still working very hard to get things under control there. Now we know that the fire is still continuing to intensify and move out there. And one more update on the helicopter crash that happened on Friday. That crash involved one helicopter, one person on board. He was talking and was conscious when he was taken to hospital, and he is still in hospital recovering. So we are awaiting an update from officials later on this afternoon around 2 o'clock Atlantic time with more details on this major fire here in Nova Scotia. Arthi. Thank you for this, Brett.
