A North Korean satellite launch on Wednesday ended in failure, sending the booster and payload plunging into the sea, North Korean state media said, and the South's military said it had recovered parts of the launch vehicle.

North Korea said it would launch its first military reconnaissance satellite to boost monitoring of U.S. military activities sometime from the 31st of May. It did so only for the launch rocket to plunge into the sea. The state news agency the KCNA reported that the new carrier rocket, Chollima-1, fell into the West Sea of Korea after losing thrust due to the abnormal starting of the second-stage engine after the separation of the first stage. The South Korean military shared these pictures of debris believed to be parts of the space launch vehicle. There were emergency alerts in parts of South Korea, including in Seoul, where residents were rattled by air raid sirens and mobile phone alerts that called for rare evacuations. I was worried about whether I need to withdraw money and whether I should prepare water and what I should do. So I turned on the television and the alert message was real. I was really worried. And then around 7 a.m. I got another alert saying it's now okay. So I came out." There were sirens here too in the southern Okinawa prefecture in Japan. Notices were soon withdrawn with no danger or damage reported. Tokyo meanwhile issued a complaint to Pyongyang through diplomatic channels in Beijing. Taking into account the repeated launches of missiles, North Korea's continued actions threaten the safety and security of our country, the region and the international community.
