There should be a girl sitting on this seat in class, but she's not at school today because she's got her period. Rashida Heneby knows exactly what that's like. She often misses lessons during her period, too. She's one of many girls in Ghana whose education is damaged because her family cannot afford sanitary pads. It's not that easy because when I'm in my menstrual cycle, my parents don't have the money to give me to go and buy because they are taking care of some of my other brothers and siblings, and even they use some of the money to buy foodstuffs to cook for us, so my parents don't have the money to just buy them. Because of that, sometimes I don't even come to school. A recent report by United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, showed that nearly all girls living in rural communities in Ghana miss 20 percent of their schooling because of this period poverty. They know what they are missing. It's pain me. Like maybe I will accept myself from school and my uncles will sit in the classroom and learn and I'm not there. If I come and ask them, what they have is what they will give me. Maybe sometimes some of them will even teach me maybe wrong or correct and I don't know, so I have to take it like that. Local activists have formed Girls' Club to talk about periods and show them reusable pads. They give these pads to the girls for free. We felt this was a great relief because if they can be able to use this reusable pad for three years, then that means that they mentally buy a sanitary pad with what will be reduced. A pack of disposable sanitary pads costs at least two euros. For many families, that's a whole day's minimum wage. Most of the price is taxes. The NGO Action Aid Ghana has been leading the push to persuade the government to cut those taxes. Menstruation should not be something that keeps a girl out of school and so government as a matter of agency need to really reconsider the tax imposed on sanitary products and reduce this tax so that the rural girl can be able to afford the sanitary pad to keep them in school and towards realization of the SDG Goal 4.
