ECOWAS also demanded the restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau, and warned it could impose sanctions on the nation. Dias, a 47-year-old relative political newcomer, has said he was on track to win the November 23 presidential election before the military coup. The opposition coalition backing him has also denounced the takeover. They said it is a desperate attempt by President Umaro Sisoko Embalo and his supporters to block the proclamation of election results that would have confirmed his defeat. Major General Orta Inta, the interim president installed by military officers, said the coup was necessary to stop a plot by, quote, narco-traffickers. Our action became a clear response to a growing threat that could have endangered democracy and the political stability of the Guinean state. He said that the threat is capable of causing public disorder and even the disintegration of the institutions of a democratic rule-of-law state. The military has tightened its grip on Guinea-Bissau, banning protests and strikes after hundreds took to the streets demanding the release of detained opposition leaders and the publication of election results. The latest coup reflects a continued pattern of instability in the nation, a major cocaine transport hub with a long history of military interventions in politics.
