This happened late last night on a one train that was stopped at the Columbus Circle Station, and the suspect is still on the loose. If you ride the subway, you know that man or woman looks a little off. I'm going to avoid them. But with this latest attack, the guy didn't even speak to the victim. It was completely unprovoked, making it all the more scary. He just walked up to the guy and started stabbing. It happened last night around 10 o'clock. A 61 year old man is riding the one train when a man approaches, doesn't say a word and just lunges at him, stabbing him with a screwdriver twice in the head and face. Then the attacker just runs off. Now the victim was taking a Mount Sinai West and appeared to be alert and conscious when paramedics arrived. He's in stable condition this morning. I won't say I don't feel unsafe, but I will say that the subway isn't a guaranteed safe place to be. I've lived here since 1988. I've seen the highs and the lows of subway safety. It's gone down a bit since pandemic, and I hope we can get back to where we were about 5-10 years ago. It needs to be addressed. You know, we all have mentally ill people in our families. Happily, we can care for them, and it's time for the city to buck up. Adams needs to stand up and do something for these kids. Yeah. So when you talk to subway riders, as I did this morning, their concern again is there's no rhyme or reason to these attacks. That's different from just crime where someone's trying to rob you. I mean, people are just attacking you and then running away for no reason. It's quite scary. They'll attack you and then run away for no reason. So as you mentioned, Chris, this man still on the loose. I reached out to M. T. A. This morning. They said that they are aggressively combing through their camera footage, trying to find him with the help of the M. Y. P. D. They say they will aggressively prosecute him once they do find him. And we also reached out to the governor's office asking what she's doing to keep riders safe and how she's going to clamp down on this unprovoked violence underground.
