Staff Sergeant Demi Palachuk, who is also running for local office, stated she would refuse orders to deploy to Chicago, emphasizing her commitment to her community and family. She highlighted that many Guard members are immigrants or legal permanent residents, and that the uncertainty around deployment is causing significant anxiety among them. The temporary block on deployment remains under review by the Supreme Court.

Good evening, John. We spoke with two active duty members of the Illinois National Guard who spoke with us in their personal capacity, not on behalf of all troops. But Staff Sergeant Demi Palachuk, she's also running for local office. She's a Latina. She told us she fears retribution from the Pentagon, but that it's too important not to speak up. If you were activated to the Chicago mission, would you defy orders? Absolutely. I would definitely say no. Tell me why. I mean, I'm not going to go against my community members, my family, and my culture, my neighbors. And I believe that this is the time to be on the right side of history. In Illinois, there are around 200 people who are legal permanent residents, green card holders who are either part of the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard. Demi, I know you've spoken with some of them. Tell me what they're feeling right now. So about 20,000 people in the military are undocumented or going through the green card process. Many of my soldiers are of the Hispanic community. And they did join to get themselves or their family documents. They are in sheer panic. And that temporary block on the National Guardsmen here is before the Supreme Court. And John, they could weigh in any day now.
