NASA named the first woman and the first African American ever assigned as astronauts to a lunar mission, introducing them as part of the four-member team of the Artemis II - to fly as early as next year on what would be the first crewed voyage around the moon in more than 50 years.

The moon may be mankind's nearest neighbour, but when it comes to revealing its secrets, scientists say we've only scratched the surface. After the first Artemis mission, Artemis 2 will send a manned crew to do a lunar flyby. It won't land on the surface, but it will be the closest man has come to the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972. Now since then of course we have made quite some progress with probes around the moon so we have discovered quite massive amounts of water on the South Pole, which is the most interesting place currently also for mostly for scientists. Four astronauts, including three Americans and one Canadian, will make up the crew. It aims to blast off in November next year, and if it's a success, it'll be followed by a third mission in the years to come. We want to establish ourselves and have a scientific base on the moon like we have today in the poles, in Antarctica or other extreme places on Earth. For many, the moon is merely a stepping stone to further planetary exploration. NASA eventually hopes to use a permanent base on the moon as a springboard to send a manned mission to planet Mars.
