A recent report has found that Venezuelan citizens deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador were subjected to severe abuse, including torture, sexual violence, and forced disappearances, at the CECOT maximum-security prison. Investigators, citing interviews with over 40 detainees, reported inhumane conditions, lack of access to food and medical care, and that many detainees had not been convicted of crimes in the U.S. or Venezuela.

The report also challenges the Trump administration's claims that all deported migrants were dangerous criminals or gang members, noting that many had no apparent criminal record. Most of the men have since returned to Venezuela following a U.S.-brokered prisoner swap. The White House did not address the abuse allegations but reiterated its commitment to deporting individuals deemed threats to the public.

Migrants deported to CECOT subject to 'constant beatings,' report says

A new report found some Venezuelan citizens deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador faced horrifying abuse during their time in a notorious prison. The abuse allegedly includes systematic torture, sexual violence, and forced disappearances. CBS News immigration and politics reporter Camila Montoya-Galvez broke down the details earlier today with our Vlad Dutier. The investigation found the detainees were victims of what they called constant beatings by officials at the notorious maximum security prison known as Secot in El Salvador, as well as other forms of mistreatment, including, in some cases, sexual abuse, Vlad. Investigators argue that some of these cases constitute torture under international law. And citing interviews with more than 40 of the Venezuelan men held at this mega prison in that Central American country, the report also said the detainees faced inhumane conditions, that they were held incommunicado, without sufficient, rather, access to food, medical care and basic hygiene in some cases. Importantly, Vlad, the investigation also raises questions about what the Trump administration has said about these men. The administration, as you might remember, accused all of these migrants of being dangerous criminals, terrorists and members of the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua. But back in March, CBS News was first to obtain and publish the list of the men who were sent to El Salvador. And using that list, Vlad, we found that many of the deportees did not have any apparent criminal record in the U.S. or abroad, despite what the administration said. And investigators today also found that the detainees, many of them had not been convicted of any crimes by federal or state authorities in the U.S. or in Venezuela. So again, we should note that many of these men, all of them now, are back in Venezuela after a prisoner swap, Vlad, was brokered by the U.S. back in July. Now, in a statement to CBS News, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson did not address the allegations in Wednesday's report, but said, quote, President Trump is committed to keeping his promises to the American people by removing dangerous criminal and terrorist illegal aliens who pose a threat to the American public.
